British Values

Prestolee Primary is incredibly proud of the British Values it implements within the ethos of the school and the curriculum taught. British Values are a crucial component of school life and a key contributor to the social, moral, spiritual and cultural development of our children.

We actively promote British Values, as defined under the Ofsted guidance 2014, to prepare our children for life in modern Britain.

The Department for Education states that there is a need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

Democracy

We learn about and experience democracy through voting for groups and teams, curriculum links to social history, class debates and by keeping up to date with current affairs. We encourage our children to take part in decision making processes which enable them to develop communication skills and a healthy respect for the democratic practice. Children are taught to listen to others and share their ideas and opinions during speaking and listening activities. We ensure that we listen to both pupil and parent voice through daily communication and regular surveys.

The Rule of Law

We promote the understanding of rule of law so we can learn in a safe and happy environment. We consistently reinforce our high expectations of behaviour and children are taught the value and reasons behind our rules. Strong links with the community police and other emergency services help our children to infer what is right and wrong. The promotion of E-safety is important to us and our ‘Digital Leaders’ work hard to raise awareness and provide the knowledge and understanding of how to stay safe on-line.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We learn about different faiths and beliefs in order to understand and appreciate diversity. We enhance children’s understanding through religious education studies; assemblies and visits to different places of worship.  Beliefs, traditions and customs are studied, with visitors invited in to our school to enrich and extend understanding. Assemblies are regularly planned to include stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. Through this our children gain an understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society.

Mutual Respect

Respect is one of the core values of our school and is deeply embedded in our learning environment, class rules and everyday life. Our children understand that respect is shown to everyone, whatever differences we may have. We provide opportunities for children to link with other schools, take part in team games and debate ideas knowing it is safe to disagree with each other. We have a strong emphasis on fairness and kindness and enjoy celebrating each other’s achievements; both in and out of school.

Individual Liberty

At Prestolee, children are actively encouraged to make independent choices, knowing they are in a safe, secure and supportive environment. We help children to understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advise how to do this safely. We encourage our children to see themselves as unique individuals and aim to provide opportunities for children to shine and contribute to our community. The development of our Rights Respecting Steering Group supports children in becoming global citizens and promotes our belief that children achieve most when they feel included and valued.
